The luxury shirt wear brand is the brainchild of brand new Industry member, Carl Thompson and while it’s not on Savile Row yet, it’s certainly got the credentials to be. As worn by fellow Industry member, David Gandy – the brand specialises in pin collar shirts. In this exclusive interview with the founder, we find out more about Carl’s expansion plan.
How did you go from pin collar shirts to Hawkins & Shepherd the brand?
I’ve always been interested in 1920s fashion. It was a time when men really took pride in their appearance, they wanted to look smart. But more than that, it was about getting into a market place that’s already saturated with a lot of other shirt brands. To differentiate between the competition I decided to specialise in a particular kind of shirt – the pin collar shirt – to drive online sales and traffic. After developing that as a foundation, Hawkins & Shepherd was born to reach a larger market. We now carry both sides of my family name. They worked as market traders, one in east London, and one in Georgetown, Guyana. Now I’ve united the two to revisit a lost family trade.
